I know that I have been guilty of presenting only the "front" of mathematics (e.g., clean solutions and steps without detours) to my students in the past. Upon reflection, I felt that focusing on the front of mathematics was one of the main reasons for students giving up in class. This focus led my students to believe that if they couldn't get an answer cleanly on the first or second try, they were bad in math and there was little point in continuing. I want to make things better for my students going forward, and I know many other math educators do too.
This website provides resources and instructional strategies that promote the celebration of the "back of mathematics," specifically through the lens of developing more equitable math classrooms.
Please see the "Recommended Reading" section of this website for books that promote these ideas as well!
